What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a healing art that has been used in China for thousands of years and is a form of holistic veterinary care. When specific points on the body are stimulated with needles, light, heat or electricity we can achieve healing and balance energy flow. It is considered the mainstay of traditional Chinese medicine.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is performed by inserting thin, sterile, stainless steel needles into specific points on the body. Acupuncture produces a physiological response. It can provide pain relief, stimulate the immune and nervous systems, increase microcirculation, and decrease inflammation. Acupuncture can also help restore balance between organ systems for optimal health and overall wellbeing.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

It is practically painless and many animals find it relaxing.  Pet owners frequently hold their dogs or cats in their lap or sit near them during the treatment.  An animal may become sleepy or their symptoms may worsen for 24 hours after a session.  These effects are an indication that physiological changes are taking place and is most often followed by improvement in the animal's condition.

How long does a session take and in what frequency?

The acupuncture typically lasts 20-30 minutes depending on the temperament of the animal. Mild and short-term problems may be cured with a few weekly sessions, while chronic or severe conditions may necessitate ongoing treatment. Frequency of the treatment is dictated by the individual condition. Most patients start with weekly treatments, which are then decreased in frequency as the patient begins to heal.

What conditions can be treated with acupuncture?

Acupuncture can be used to treat an endless array of conditions in dogs and cats:

  • Muscular spasm or pain
  • Soft tissue injury
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Arthritis
  • Weakness
  • Incontinence
  • Post-operative recovery
  • Orthopedic injury such as hip dysplasia, knee injuries, shoulder pain, elbow dysplasia and many others
  • Spinal cord trauma including paresis (weakness) and paralysis

Keep in mind; acupuncture for animals can also help with illness, such as:

  • Kidney disease
  • Nausea or decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Cancer
  • Eye issues such as dry eye, glaucoma and others
  • Auto-immune disease
